Too scary to write!

It has taken me a couple days to write this post because the situation was so scary i needed a couple days to get over it.

Saturday afternoon i gave Bailee her first does of an antibiotic named Septra. It is a preventative antiobiotic while we decided whether we are going to do surgery or not. A couple hours later she had diarrhea and went pale. I thought that was pretty weird and then about 10 minutes later she threw up a huge amount! It was very thick and mucusy(not sure of spelling haha). Once again i thought that was weird. She was acting super hungry so i decided to feed her. Well halfway through her bottle she threw up even more! Holy cow i started to get worried. I took her temp and it was 100.3. Great now she had a fever. So i called the on call doctor and talked to the nurse. As i was telling her everything that was going on Bailees mouth, hands and feet started turning blue!!!!!! I started freaking out and told the nurse. Here is her reply, " Well now i dont really now what you are concerned about?" I was like my baby is blue and throwing up! She proceeds to say, "Well that could be caused by a few different things why dont you wait it out and call us back tomorrow if things gets worse and we will make an appointment." EXCUSE ME!!!!!!! I hung up the phone and started freaking out. I had Chance and Nate give Bailee a blessing and right after i felt very strongly that we need to go to the ER ASAP! As i was walking out the door Bailee started struggling to breathe. In the back of my mind i knew she would be ok because her blessing said she would be. But in the front of my mind i was a complete mess and couldnt imagine losing my little girl. On the way to the hospital i was having a really hard time keeping her awake as Chance drove like a crazy person! No matter how much i pinched her or squeezed her she wouldnt even react. She would just look at me with her eyes half open. We finally got to the ER and they immediately took her back. She got way worse from my house to the hospital. She was lethargic, her entire body was blue and her SATs were in the 70's(meaning she wasnt getting very much oxygen. Chances mom and sister and my brother met us there thankfully, i needed all the support i could get. They quickly put her on oxygen and she started crying and turning pink. I was a little relieved but i knew something else was wrong. They thought she may have aspirated and her throw up got into her lungs. They did a million and one tests and everything came back normal.

That is when i really started to worry. My worst fear is for my kids to have something that is a mystery and no one can find out what it is. We were in the ER for i think 5 or so hours, with no answers. Bailees SAT's remained the same, really good, but she would all of the sudden turn blue. It was so scary i just wanted them to find out what was wrong RIGHT THEN!!! She was suffering and having such a hard time breathing i couldnt even handle it. Finally they admitted Bailee up to the pediatric floor. The Pediatrician that was there was amazing. He came in an assessed Bailee and and wanted to know every detail. They hadnt let her eat for 7 hours at that point, so not only was she struggling with everything else, she was also STARVING!!! After he examined her he let her eat and she was MUCH better! They had her still hooked up to oxygen and had an Iv of fluids going as well. She was dehydrated from all the throwing up and not eating for 7 hours. The doctor left the room and didnt come back for a while. Finally he came back, and came back with answers! He researched and researched and finally figured out that she had a weird chemical reaction to the antibiotic i gave her. He explained to me that the hemoglobins hold all the oxygen and release it to the tissues. Well the antibiotic i gave her made it so that the hemoglobins held on to the oxygen instead of releasing it. That is why the computers were saying she had enough oxygen in her body but yet she was still very blue. Thankfully that was an easy fix! We just had to wait for that dose to get out of her system. I was so happy when he told me that. That it wasnt some weird random disease or something they couldnt figure out. I was also trying not to think about the possibility that it could have been heart failure. I wouldnt even let my brain think about it. He also said she was dehydrated!

Finally things calmed down and we were able to let Bailee fall asleep. But not for long. About every hour they were coming in to do more tests. A lot of needles and and squeezing blood out. Plus some suctioning even though they couldnt get anything out because she wasnt congested. It was a really long night and Bailee was waking up about every 5 minutes. She was really uncomfortable and was still breathing really weird to me. By the time all the doctors left and i was able to try to sleep it was about 2am. At 3am i still had not fallen asleep because Bailees breathing was still just too weird sounding to me. She would breathe, hold it and let it out and repeat. The whole night she did this.  It was so terrible! Well at 3am i checked her and it felt like she had a fever so i ran and got the nurse and sure enough she had a fever of 100.4. Yes a low grade fever but too high for such a tiny baby. They gave her some tylenol and came back and checked in about 45 minutes. Her temp went up to 100.8! But then came right down to 98.6. I am guessing her fever just had to peak and then it would break. So between the fever and the breathing there was no way i was going to sleep. No worries for Chance though. Not one single thing woke him up at all the whole night! What a bum! At about 4am the nurse came in and told me to get into bed and that she would sit there and rock Bailees crib and watch her so i could get some sleep. that was all i needed. I fell asleep so quickly. I just needed to know that someone was watching her and making sure everything was ok. That was so nice of the nurse! I only got to sleep for almost 2 hours and then they had to run more tests so We were up! As Sunday went along they would not let us go because they still had no idea where the fever came from. There was no infection and all her tests came back normal. So we had to wait 24 hours to make sure the fever didnt return. Throughout the day Bailee got better and better. Soon enough, she was back to her sweet and smiley self! Thankfully.

We were finally discharged Monday afternoon. Still no answers to the fever but i was just so thankful to be going home but also a little worried because i just felt like Bailee was safe in the hospital. Since then Bailee has been doing really good. She has been sleeping pretty all day because i am sure she is so exhausted from the long weekend. I just look at her and get butterflies to know that she is still with us and is back to normal.

One more thing i wanted to note: We now know that this trip to the ER was not for Bailee and that Bailee was always going to be ok, this trip was for me and Chance. Oddly enough it was an answer to our prayers. As you know from my previous post, we were needing to decide whether or not to do surgery or antibiotics for her reflux of the bladder. Well we know for sure now. Chance and i were pretty dead set on doing the surgery, for all the reason i stated in the previous post. Then when we finally figured out that it was the antibiotic that caused all this mess, we thought for sure our answer was to do the surgery!Little did we know.................. When the doctor was assessing Bailee ei had mentioned that we were probably going to do the surgery and he gave me a weird look. After he researched every note and medical history on Bailee he came back to talk to us. He asked me why we were thinking about doing the surgery. I told him everything about her immune system and how we obviously dont have luck with antibiotics. He very politely said, " I do not want to cloud your decision because it is completly up to you and your husband, but, the antibiotic i would prescribe you is one that is specific to the urine. It only catches the bacteria in the urine. It wont touch any part of her immune system.I have had a lot of patients with this problem and none of them have come out with immune system problems, in fact most of them grow out of it within the year. My recommendation for you is that you try this antibiotic and if she gets another bladder infection then definitely do the surgery because clearly antibiotics are not going to work. But if she doesnt then keep her on them. She will most likely grow out of it and you will never have to do the surgery." WHAT THE HECK!!! Why has no other doctor told me that or wanted to prescribe that????? Of course i asked a million more questions and that option was becoming very enticing. Now to back up a little bit, I was supposed to give her the antibiotic on Friday but kept forgetting. Then i was going to give it to her Saturday morning but forgot again. When i finally gave it to her it was Saturday evening, just in time for that particular doctor to be there. That was his only shift that weekend. He wasnt there earlier either. Both my dad and Chances mom had very strong impressions that Bailee was going to be fine but that we were there to recieve an answer to our prayers. Now when they told me that i was like yea right this is not an answer to any prayer of mine!!! But sure enough it was. Poor little Bailee had to suffer so we could get an answer, but who knows what she would have suffered through if we did the surgery.

On a lighter note i wanted to add so funny and cute pictures to lighten up this post!
HAHAHA I about died yesterday when Blake woke up from his nap wearing this! Yes that is his rash guard he is wearing as pants!
My two sweeties today before heading off to run errands! Blake sure does love her
These are the best two i could get. I still cant get him to look directly at the camera!

Sugery or antibiotics?

This post is going to be a lot of explaining and defining so really sorry for how long it is! But i need to record this for myself and Bailee.

Little miss Bailee girl has had some issues lately that i would like to blog about. I previously blogged that she has now had 3 bladder infections in her short little life. I was stumped on how she was getting these. I couldnt help but start to blame myself for either how i was wiping her or leaving her in a diaper too long etc. I was having a really hard time because every time we went to the doctor (which was a couple times a week) they would have to cath her and get a urine sample only to tell me that she had yet another bladder infection. At one point she was throwing up like crazy and even a little dehydrated. They did some blood work and found out she had some type of virus. So sad for such a little girl. My docotr suggested that we go to primary childrens and runs some tests on her kidneys, bladder and urethra. So we went up to Primary Childrens hospital on Tuesday and found out the following:

1. Her kidneys and Bladder look great!
2. She has a little bit of a hard time urinating
3. It appeared that she had a little bit of Reflux on the bladder.

Reflux of the bladder: There is a tube called the Ureter that goes from the Kidneys to the bladder. In a normal person the Ureter goes all the way down in the bladder and rests next to a muscle. When you are finished urinating the muscle clamps down on the Ureter and prevents the left over urine that you dont pee out, from going back up to the kidneys. Well in Bailees case, her Ureters are not in the bladder all the way, so when she urinates, there is no muscle next to it to clamp it off so it just shoots back up to the kidneys. Well you would think that is ok because the kindeys are what makes the urine. But once the urine leaves the kidneys it becomes contaminated so the left over urine can have bacteria in it which will go back up to the kidneys and create kidney infections.

We left primary childrens feeling a little uneasy and unsure about the whole thing. Well Bailees doctor called yesterday with the actual results and said that she has a pretty significant case of reflux and she wants to send us to a urologist at Primary Childrens to discuss our options.

We were lucky enough to get into Dr. Snow this morning. He basically told me that they have a grade scale from 1-5(5 being the worst) and they graded Bailee a 2. So a mild to moderate case. So he told me we have 2 options:

1. Preventative antibiotics: This is where she would have to be on antibiotics for at least a year. 1/4 of a dose 1 time daily for a year. The statistic shows that patients Bailees age that are graded a 2 have an 80% chance of recovery within the year doing the antibiotics. After the year is up they will x-ray her and if the reflux is gone they will take her off the antibiotics and if not then she is on antibiotics for another year until she reaches 3 years old. If she still has it then, then they will just do surgery. The antibiotics will prevent any bacteria from getting into her urine and going up to her kidneys. over time, her Ureters can grow and move into the correct spot and she would be fine.

2. Surgery: The surgery would happen here in a couple weeks and what they would do is they would put her out and make 2 little incisions near her bladder and insert tubes or pull her Uterers down and into the correct spot so the muscle will clamp down on it and prevent urine from going up to her kidneys. She would have to be in the hospital for 2 days post surgery and would have 2 little tubes coming out of the incisions, acting as a catheter until everything heals which will be a couple weeks. The surgery has a 98% success rate and the risks for infection, bleeding or any complications are less than 5%.

Both options are terrible in my opinion. I dont want her being on antibiotics for that long. Her immune system will be ruined. Once she will finally be able to be off them she will get so sick all the time because she has not been exposed to anything. But surgery is so so so scary. I dont want them to put my little girl out and make cuts in her little tiny body. What if something does happen?? She is just too young to be going through any of this :( The doctor told me both options are not fun and that we need to just go home and pray and figure out what would be best for our little girl.

My mind is definitely leaning more towards the surgery. I just feel that with antibiotics her immune system could have long term side effects and potentially ruin her life. She has a chance of being in and out of the hospital all the time because she will not have been given the opportunity to build up her immune system. I also feel like what if she is not part of that 80% and she ends up having the surgery anyway? Then her immune system is crappy and she has to have surgery.  With the surgery the problem would be fixed right away and she can stay normal. Although, its surgery, so things can definitely go wrong.

We all got blessings the other night and Bailees said that all this stuff that has come over her body will be fixed and healed and that she would be ok. So i have to have faith and do lots of praying and fasting to know what route to take. I am so thankful that i have a heavenly father that know me and knows Bailee and can tell me exactly what to do. I know she will be ok and that Heavenly Father will be right there with her no matter what we decide to do.

I got to take pictures of the different tests she did the other day so here is our trip to Primary Childrens!
Bailee and her daddy. Chance works full time and goes to school full time so we dont see him a whole lot, but Bailee is finally starting to get to know her daddy and she loves him!
The first test was an ultrasound to make sure nothing was wrong with her kidneys or her bladder. She did so amazing. She just laid there and wiggled around
Me and my favorite girl! I have such a great connection with her. I know we are going to be best friends!
Oh my gosh i love that sweet face. It is so innocent
 And so happy! And drooly!!
You would never be able to tell that she has anything wrong or that she is in pain from these bladder infections. She smiles all day and is so amazing! She only cries when she needs something

So this test was definitely worse. They had to stick a catheter in her and shoot contrast up and watch it come down. This is the test that showed reflux. They had me hold her hands down so she didnt accidentally grab anything.
They wrapped her legs together so the cath wouldnt come out. I thought it was so sad but she didnt seem to be bothered. She cried for a second when they did the cath but thats it. She sat there for 45 minutes and was soooo great!!!
This is them taking pictures and video of everything! She was sooooo great! I am so proud of her! I would not want that thing above me for that long but she was such a trooper!

2 little ones

I love having my two little ones in my life. Yes, it is very challenging sometimes, and yes sometimes i want to pull my hair out, but i wouldnt trade it for the world! Life has gotten soooo crazy since Bailee entered our lives. I feel like all day i am a broken record. Blake dont lay on her, Blake leave her alone, Blake dont poke your sister, Blake please be soft. HAHAHA! Oh my goodness he loves her so much he cant leave her alone. Not to mention i have also been trying to make Bailee cute little things here and there. Oh and for some reason Blake has gotten messier! I clean the house like 4 times a day. He like to bring pretty much every toy he owns, out into the living room and play. Bailee is just sweet. She loves to stand all day long so sometimes i just have to let her cry because i cant sit there and have her stand all day long. She is so funny!
My mom got her these adorable leg warmers and they looked sooooooo adorable on her!!!
I love those cute cheeks. Her and Blake just have the yummiest cheeks ever
This is pretty much what she loves. This girl loves to suck and if she doesnt have her binky, then she settles for her hand, arm, my shoulder, my arms, anything she can get a hold of.
Ok those lips really might be perfect!
I dont know why my camera keeps whiting my pictures out but it looks kind of cool
Ummm yea, best i could get of Blake. Little stinker cant sit for a picture to save his life
 So so happy
I love her blue eyes. I hope they stay that color
Love that cute smile. Even though Bailee is going through some rough times right now with all these bladder infections, she is still sooooo happy. Yesterday at church she was so adorable smiling at everyone, giggling and cooing. I loved it
even though he is a stinker most of the time these days i still cant help but love this cute boy
Blake and his cute friend Rylan. They love each other so much just have a hard time getting along sometimes. So Katlin and I have been trying to have them play together more often and it is seeming to work really well. Every time it gets better. Thank goodness because we love them
Love the bubbles! And of course the cute girl behind them
